What is Content Effort Scoring?

Our content effort scores aims to simulate Google’s own contentEffort attribute, which scores content based on how much effort has gone into making the page.

A page’s score is determined by the effort that has gone into the content throughout - so for example using stock imagery may score you less than making custom artwork or a video showing you using a product or service.

How does the tool work

The tool works by either crawling your website and scoring your pages or, by grouping pages to a certain term and scoring and comparing you vs your competitors - aggregating how you perform vs your competitors.

How does this tool help?

This tool allows us to audit, benchmark and track your content’s expected value vs competitors. Further, we can identify gaps in your content strategy that live at the value of the content level, over just whether a page’s content is thin or has a date that’s outdated.

FAQ

Is ContentEffort a real metric used by Google?

In the Content Warehouse leak of 2024, the contentEffort metric was included as both a standalone document and a referenced metric used by several systems for a determination of the quality of a page’s content.

Does your tool simply score whether a list of features are present?

No, we inject AI into the process to assess the value, insights and comprehensiveness of the piece, so to assess for expertise, originality, and content features.

Do you use the tool once for auditing purposes only?

No, we typically recommend our clients use the tool monthly. The SERP is a dynamic environment, which means we need to monitor to see where a competitor has changed or a new website has entered the space; so we recommend reviewing at very least monthly.

How does content effort affect AI visibility

Our experiences to date have shown that pages which score high in Content Effort, are also more prevalant in AI responses and listings.

We expect this is because content that is original, includes lots of well thought through talking points and deliverys the content with a strong UX - if well recieved by AI Agents and well optimised for being lifted and shared.
